Dress Code

To help create an environment conducive to learning, students at Ahwatukee Foothills Prep High School are required to wear a simple uniform.  This policy is designed to permit students to focus their attention on academics and on those aspects of their personalities that are truly important.

The school uniform consists of the following:

Gentlemen:

  • Shirts: Any solid colored oxford-style button down dress shirts (short or long sleeve) in any color other than red or navy blue or any solid polo shirts in any color other than red or navy blue. Shirts must be tucked in to the waistband of their pants and belts must be visible.  Solid colored sweatshirts or sweaters may be worn on cool days in any color other than red or navy blue.  No hoods. Jackets/coats may not be worn in the classroom.
  • Pants: Tan, black, or navy blue pants or walking shorts.  Pants must be worn at the waist and will not be oversized or baggy.  Shorts must hang just above the knee and may not be excessively baggy or tight fitting.   Denim is not permitted.  Belts are optional but if worn must be solid colored belts (black, brown) and must be worn around the waist.
  • Shoes and Socks: Students must wear closed-toed shoes (e.g. sneakers or dress shoes), sandals and flip flops are NOT allowed. Shoes and socks with coloring, designs or logos that are deemed disruptive to the learning environment are not permitted.  Shoes that light up, make noise, or have wheels (Healys) are not permitted.  SOCKS MUST BE WORN AT ALL TIMES.
  • Hair: Students must keep their hair, clean, neat, and away from their eyes.  Hair color must be natural looking.  No shaved heads, Mohawks, or rat’s tails. No facial hair will be allowed, gentlemen must be clean shaven.
  • Jewelry: Necklaces must be worn under the shirt. Only one ring and bracelet or watch is allowed.  Jewelry that is disruptive to the learning environment will be removed. NO body piercings jewelry will be allowed.
  • Hats, bandannas, and sunglasses are not permitted indoors.
  • No tattoos, temporary or permanent.  This includes pen and ink drawings on the skin made by the student or someone else.

Ladies:

  • Shirts: Any solid colored oxford-style button down blouse (short or long sleeve) in any color other than red or navy blue or any solid polo shirts in any color other than red or navy blue. Shirts must be tucked in to the waistband of their pants and belts must be visible.  Solid colored sweatshirts or sweaters may be worn on cool days in any color other than red or navy blue.  No hoods. Jackets/coats may not be worn in the classroom.
  • Pants and Skirts: Ladies may wear long pants, knee-length skirts, skorts, or jumpers in tan, khaki, black, or navy blue.  Skirts, shorts, and dresses must pass the finger length test.  Standing with your hands at your side, the item must be longer than the student’s fingertips.  Floor-length skirts and baggy or wide-legged pants are not permitted.  If pants or skirts have belt loops, a solid dark colored belt (black, brown) may be worn. Denim is not permitted.
  • Shoes and Socks: Students must wear closed-toed shoes (e.g. sneakers or dress shoes), sandals and flip flops are NOT allowed.   • Jewelry: One necklace must be worn inside the shirt. Only studded earrings or small hoop earrings that do not dangle below the ear lobe are permitted. Girls are permitted only ONE pair of earrings. Only one ring and bracelet or watch per hand is allowed.  Jewelry that is disruptive to the learning environment will be removed. NO body piercings jewelry (other than ear rings) will be allowed.
  • Make-Up: Makeup is permitted but must be worn in moderation and tastefully.  Fingernails should be well manicured and may not be excessively long.  Fingernails may be painted in light natural shades only.  No dark shades of nail polish will be allowed (e.g. no blue, purple, black, patterned, or glittered nails allowed).
  • Hats, bandannas, and sunglasses are not permitted indoors.
  • No tattoos, temporary or permanent.  This includes pen and ink drawings on the skin made by the student or someone else.

Any other details not specified above will be up to the discretion of the administration.
